IAN JONES APPOINTED

General Manager of All Blacks Experience - From lineouts to leadership

One of the most iconic figures in All Blacks history and a proud member of Ngāi Tahu has been appointed General Manager of the All Blacks Experience. This appointment marks a significant new chapter for the attraction, which has become a must-visit destination for rugby fans and international visitors

Ian Jones, affectionately known as “Kamo” after his hometown in Northland, is a name that resonates deeply within the rugby world. Standing at 6’7”, Jones was a formidable presence in the second row throughout the 1990s. His career spanned 105 caps, including 79 tests, making him one of the most capped All Blacks of all time. Renowned for his lineout mastery, athleticism, and tactical intelligence, Jones was a crucial part of the All Blacks during a golden era of New Zealand rugby.

One of Jones’ most memorable contributions came during the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa, where the All Blacks reached the final in a tournament that became iconic for its role in uniting a post-apartheid South Africa. Although the All Blacks narrowly lost to the Springboks in the final, Jones’ performance throughout the tournament further cemented his status as a rugby legend.

Jones’ appointment comes at a pivotal time as the All Blacks Experience prepares to launch its newest offering: the All Blacks vs. Springboks Rivalry Tour. This tour will dive deep into one of the fiercest rivalries in rugby, exploring the key moments and epic battles that have defined the relationship between these two rugby powerhouses.

The Rivalry Tour promises to be a highlight for any rugby enthusiast, bringing to life the history of matches that have become legendary. From the 1956 series where the All Blacks secured their first home victory against the Springboks, to the emotionally charged 1995 Rugby World Cup final, manuhiri will get an in-depth look at the stories behind the rivalry.

Jones’ firsthand experience in many of these matches adds a layer of authenticity and insight that few others could provide. His involvement in curating these stories ensures that manuhiri will not only learn about the history of the All Blacks but will feel the intensity and passion that has driven the team through decades of competition.

Now, Jones brings his wealth of experience and passion for the game to the All Blacks Experience, where he will guide the attraction into its next phase of growth and development. For Jones, this role is about connecting people with the cultural and historical essence of the All Blacks, which is deeply intertwined with New Zealand’s identity.

“The All Blacks Experience is about more than just celebrating rugby; it’s about sharing the wairua (spirit) and values that define us as New Zealanders,” Jones says. “I’m excited to help visitors connect with our culture and history in a way that’s both meaningful and inspiring.”

As General Manager, Jones is expected to bring a new level of storytelling and engagement to the All Blacks Experience. His leadership will enhance the attraction’s existing offerings, which include immersive, interactive exhibits that allow manuhiri (visitors) to step into the shoes of an All Black, face the haka, and experience the highs and lows of legendary matches.

As Ian Jones steps into his new role, manuhiri can expect new and engaging ways to connect with the legacy of New Zealand rugby, guided by one of the game’s most respected figures. Under Jones’ leadership, the All Blacks Experience is set to continue inspiring a new generation of fans and preserving the spirit of the All Blacks for years to come.
